Empowering Our Hispanic Neighbors through Centro Rendu
In the fall of 2022, Centro Rendu was added to the invaluable programs offered at St. Vincent de Paul of Tacoma, Pierce County to help our neighbors in need. Founded at St. Vincent de Paul in Seattle, King County in 2013, this program aims to empower Hispanic families through one-on-one case management and hands-on assistance. While it is still a relatively new program for St. Vincent de Paul of Tacoma, it is already proving to be an asset to an underserved population in Pierce County. Learn more.
Making Strides to Support our Hispanic Neighbors in Pierce County
Operating out of St. Vincent de Paul’s newly established Community Resource Center adjacent to the Tacoma Thrift Store off of South Tacoma Way, Centro Rendu works to fill the gap in resources accessible to our Hispanic neighbors in need. This program is vital for our Hispanic neighbors, as they are often a vulnerable group, and removes a language barrier most Hispanic families and individuals face when seeking support. “I visualize Centro Rendu acting as a more personal version of a helpline,” says Esmeralda, case manager, Centro Rendu. “This program provides a space where we can meet our Hispanic neighbors in need face-to-face, asses their needs and provide direct, immediate services and support.”
Just after opening its doors at St. Vincent de Paul of Tacoma last September, Centro Rendu is already making a name for itself in Pierce County. “We’ve noticed an increase of new clients seeking support after hearing stories firsthand from a friend or neighbor about how Centro Rendu was able to help them,” said Esmeralda. Along with friends and neighbors, healthcare clinics and other local organizations are also beginning to recommend Centro Rendu to Hispanic families as a place to receive support.
Ways Centro Rendu Provides Support
One distinctive aspect of Centro Rendu is that it takes an individualized approach, as a one-size-fits-all solution would not be as beneficial to those seeking support. While every case is unique, some of the most sought-after services include educational classes, help with job searches and assistance requests for basic needs such as housing and payments for utilities.
Along with providing direct assistance, Centro Rendu also connects clients with other local organizations with more specialized services in the area such as legal referrals, which is one of the most requested services.
How it works
Those in need of Centro Rendu’s services can visit the Community Resource Center Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 am to 3 pm located at 4009 South 56th in Tacoma. Or, call 253-499-4245 ext. 5.
